Poland vs Greece
The
UEFA European Championships will kick off with co-hosts Poland taking on Greece in
Warsaw at the National Stadium. Poland will be looking for a winning start in front of
their home fans but will face a tough challenge in the form of 2004 Euro winners
Greece.
Russia
are clear favourites to top the group, with second place up for grabs for Poland, Greece
and Czech Republic. All three sides will be hoping not to slip up early on, which is why
this opening game is extremely crucial for all the teams.

News
Poland
Unlike
the other sides, Poland automatically qualified for the European Championships since
they are the co-hosts. This will be their second European tournament, with their first
run ending in disappointment as they finished bottom of their group four years
ago.
Franciszek
Smuda, the former Poland international, will be managing the side of inexperienced
players as they look to make history. Home support could prove to be a big factor for
Poland in their quest for European glory against sides much tougher than
them.
Robert
Lewandowski and Jakub Blaszczykowski, the Dortmund pair, are the players to watch for
Poland, along with Arsenal goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny. The Gunners stopper will be in
charge of leading the defence for a relatively inexperienced side in the European
tournament.
Greece
As
compared to Poland, Greece are much more experienced. They have participated in recent
international tournaments and their win in the Euro 2004 make them favourites against
Poland in the opening fixture. However, their recent performance in the Euro 2008 and
World Cup 2010 confirm the side has weakened since 2004.
The
Greece coach Fernando Santos has a tough task ahead of him as everyone’s expectations to
deliver European glory rests on his shoulders. Santos has had plenty of experience,
having previously managed the likes of AUK Athens, Pananthiakos and POAK.
Greece
will be lead by Girogos Karagounis, who is one of the players who was amongst the
winning side of 2004. Along with Karagounis, Fanis Gekas and Giorgos and Samaras will be
the key players for Greece, but they will definitely have to step up their efforts if
they wish to do well this time around.
